Membership FAQs
What’s the difference between PANA and the APA?
The difference is in the title: the Audio Publishers Association is a trade association that advocates for and supports publishers. We very much appreciate the APA, and we’re very grateful for their extensive offerings supporting narrators! However, PANA is the only trade association exclusively for professional audiobook narrators. We focus on advocating for human narrators in the public and industry consciousness, being the change we want to see in the audiobook industry regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion, and providing numerous opportunities for education, support, and fun for our members’ health and careers. Member dues directly support these activities and initiatives.
What is the difference between PANA and SAG/AFTRA?
As a 501(c)(3) trade association, PANA has legal limits to what it can and should do for members, including the recognition that audiobook contract standards, negotiation, verbiage, and enforcement is the exclusive domain of SAG/AFTRA, the actors’ union. In contrast, PANA’s purpose is to educate its members to improve their skills and/or certification, to educate and exemplify to the industry diversity, equity, and inclusion practices, and to educate the public on the value of human narrators. If you have questions or concerns regarding the above matters, union member or no, please email SAG/AFTRA’s Jane Love, Richard Larkin, and Andrea Henderson directly.
Do I need to be a union member to join?
While we are huge supporters of the SAG/AFTRA union and its work for all narrators, we welcome both union and nonunion members of the narrator community to join us!
How will my membership dues be used?
PANA dues go towards PANA activities and initiatives! This includes subsidized education classes / workshops / seminars, numerous social and support groups, advocacy for the human narrator in industry and public consciousness, and so much more.
Can I join if I live outside the USA?
Absolutely! We currently have members from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia working on our committees and benefiting from our educational, social, and advocacy programs.
